interesting you should choose to focus on sperficial qualities like looks and appearance.  there's alot more to Amy's talent than her voice.  sorry you don't "get her".  also, she could give ahoot about being a role model.  If you cared to know anything of substance about her you would know that.

Winoskank - my mum used to say similar things about the Rolling Stones and Cher in the 60s. It's just Amy's style, and that's up to her - I'm far too old to criticise it. Some of the tabloids delight in publishing the most unflattering photos they can get, and close-ups of any spots and scratches, which gets me really angry. I don't imagine Amy considers herself a role model - it's not what you sign up to when you're a singer-songwriter.

OK, I wish she'd look after herself, eat more vegetables, give up smoking (everything), and so on...(nag, nag, nag) but it's for the selfish reason that her songs hit me right in the heart and I want her to be around for years, getting better and better, not fulfilling the cr*ppy tabloids' predictions that she's going to end up dead or with a fried brain and voice. Ah well, Keith Richards survived, so I'm optimistic about Amy!

Amy needs help, on that we all agree but like it or not, kids idolise her and she does have a certain responsibility to her fans, after all, they pay her wages, I am sure if she was in control of her life Amy would not l;ike to think that impressionable kids who idolise her were copying her bad ways, drinking and taking drugs, Amy knows she has a problem and that she has to sort her life out, that much has been printed in the news, but how many kids read the papers?  All they are seeing is their idol smoking crack and getting drunk and stuff.

We, as fans, should be helping Amy, not critisising her, check out this thread Help Amy to take back control of her life! Pledge your support here please, for Amy....... and leave your reply!

It really is sad.  Amy is obviously very talented but she is also slowly killing herself.  Whether she likes it or not, she IS a role model -- all performers, singers, actors, sports figures, etc. that are in the public eye are role models.  How much crack is she smoking to get emphysema for goodness sakes.  The media doesn't make it any better either.  She also shouldn't be receiving awards for her music until she gets her act together.  That is sending a message to teens that it is OK to drink and do drugs.  She should be forced into rehab and now be allowed to check herself out.  In the long run, she will be better off.

There's a news article out there on the web talking about exactly the kind of 'state' Amy Winehouse is in.

    VLC~I couldn't possibly disagree with u more!

As a parent it's my responsibility to be the #1 role model not "singers, actors, etc" as u stated.

It's entirely up to me to teach my kids what it really means to be a role model and/or a hero.

From a very early age I taught my 3 kids that "sports figures, etc" are NOT role models as u suggest.

I'm certainly not saying there aren't positive, well meaning individuals that use their fame to make a better planet.

I have always taught my kids a role model/hero is the doctor that stands on his feet for 8-10-12 hours in the operating room repairing a childs cleft pallet or a team of surgeons that are on their feet for many, many hours seperating a set of twins attached at the head or hip so they can lead a normal life. How about the fireman that runs into a burning building to save a perfect stranger knowing he himself could die in the rescue attempt or the Coast Guard Rescue guy that jumps from a helicopter into a raging sea in the black of night to save a strangers life.

These are the true role models and hero's not someone that can play an awesome guitar or hit a ball with a bat.

Mentoring begins at home. It's the parents responsibility to teach their children who to look up to and who to emulate.

Amy has never claimed to be nor does she desire to be a role model.

Amy Winehouse has an amazing gift and she shares it with those that appreciate her incredible talent.

IMHO it's unjust of people to say that she's a role model and should act accordingly.

ps~many alcoholoics/drug addicts have received and continue to receive awards/accolades.

Why aren't their names on ur list? Why have u only singled out AmyJadeWinehouse?

    How's it goin EH!

    To DanoMano,

Whilst I agree with your coments about it being the parents responsibility to set the role model and teach our kids right from wrong we cannot get away from the fact that kids DO aspire to be like those they admire, it is just a fact of life.

If a kid wants to sing and play guitar like Amy then they are not going to base their style on a brain surgeon, the image just doesn't fit.  While parents can and should do all they can to teach their kids right from wrong often, in reality, this does not happen.  Young kids are impressionable and react to peer pressure in a bid to 'fit in' and if all their mates are copying Amy than they will want to do the same.  It is up to the parents to teach their offspring right from wrong and guide them in the right direction but at the end of the day kids have their own minds, wishes and desires and will, like it or not, make their own choices, all we can really do as parents is teach them to make informed decisions and guide them on the right path, we cannot dictate how they should lead their lives, they would only rebel!

Anyone in the public eye has to acknowledge that they DO influence their fans and not just by what they are doing in their personal life either.  More and more celebrities and singers are launching clothing labels based on their own style, thus dictating high street fashion and putting their names to everyday products for advertising promotions in an attempt to pursuede the consumers.

Ultimately the parents should provide the education but at the same time those in the public eye should also be aware of the influence they have too.

i'm sure they (those in the public eye) are aware of it but they didn't sign on to bear responsibility for any of it.  and why should they?

Re: Great voice..but what a state

okay im fourteen so im young, and no kids i know would be like "oh i wanna be like amy winehouse, lets do crack!"
they would have to be veryyyyy stupid
maybe people my age or younger would be like oh i want a beehive and eyeliner flicks, but thats not going to hurt them... so whats the big deal?
and maybe they would think tattoos are cool, but its not like any one under the age of 18 can get tattoos anyway!!!
and by the time you are 18 you will realise if you do really want the tattoos or you just want to copy amy winehouse.

i don't know any one stupid enough to start drugs just because there favourite singer does drugs.
and also i think amy can be a good role model because...
pretty much all singers these days are absolutely stunning !
leona lewis, alicia keys, mariah carey, beyonce, etc.
amy is beautiful, but most people would not consider her absolutely stunning or typically pretty.
so i think that is great for kids who don't feel like they are very pretty, they can be like "amy is a great singer and is not stunning!!!"

    okay thanks!

Re: Great voice..but what a state

i can see all your points, but i think there are people in the world who are really fanatic and wants to be like amy 100% .mostly that are teenagers.and maybe they think they have to take drugs, because amy does it. of course there not that clever, because they start tking drugs because amy does.but i think this people excist! me personally will never start taking drugs, because of amy.i adore her and i love her but...! maybe some kids think drugs are cool. but amy is also a honest, strong, lovely(and so on) person, and if some people want to be like amy,it's a good thing! because amy is a great woman with a great personality! so the first the parents have to teach their children what's right and what's wrong!
